Instem and VICT3R: Pioneering Ethical Innovation in Toxicology Studies

Instem is a contributing partner in the VICT3R Consortium, a collaborative initiative exploring the use of Virtual Control Groups (VCGs) in toxicology studies.

In the ever-evolving landscape of drug development and chemical safety, the imperative to reduce animal testing has never been more pressing. The VICT3R project stands at the forefront of this transformation. As a key contributor to this groundbreaking initiative, Instem is leveraging its expertise in advanced data science and regulatory technology to help redefine the future of toxicology.

What Is VICT3R? A New Approach to Ethical Toxicology Studies

Traditional toxicology studies rely heavily on concurrent control groups (animals that receive no treatment) to establish baselines for comparison. These control groups can constitute up to 25% of the animals used in such studies. VICT3R aims to replace these with Virtual Control Groups (VCGs), utilizing historical data, advanced statistics, and artificial intelligence to create robust, virtual counterparts. This approach aligns with the 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) while also enhancing scientific outcomes and raising ethical standards in research.

How SEND Enables Virtual Control Groups in Toxicology

The concept of re-using control subjects across multiple studies has been around for some time. However, several challenges have hindered its practical implementation, chief among them being the limited availability of data. To construct a VCG, a substantial volume of control data is required to identify suitable candidates for re-use.

Over the past decade, the push for standardized data in the SEND (Standard for Exchange of Nonclinical Data) format has significantly improved data accessibility. Study data are no longer confined within proprietary data collection systems; instead, they are now more open, shareable, and interoperable.

Recognizing this opportunity, the VICT3R team has developed a database built on the SEND structure to efficiently store, manage, and curate control data. With this infrastructure in place, organizations can now easily populate the database, thanks to the widespread availability of SEND-formatted data.

What began as a regulatory requirement has evolved into a powerful enabler of innovation. The SEND standard is now paving the way for the creative re-use of data in the development of virtual control groups.

Instem’s Integral Role in VICT3R

Instem is proud to play a pivotal role in the VICT3R consortium, contributing expertise in data management, regulatory compliance, and translational science. As an official contributing partner, Instem is delivering strategic thought leadership in the implementation of SEND standards and advanced data analytics.

By leveraging Provantis®, the world’s leading study management system, Instem is also working to enable the seamless integration of VCGs into ongoing studies. This will become possible once the scientific validation of the VCG concept is achieved, helping to accelerate innovation and deliver greater value for our clients.

Advancing Scientific Rigor and Ethical Responsibility

The adoption of VCGs represents a significant advancement in both scientific methodology and ethical responsibility. By reducing the number of animals required for control groups, researchers can conduct studies that are not only more humane but also more cost-effective and efficient. Moreover, the use of historical data enhances the statistical power of studies, leading to more reliable results and better-informed regulatory decisions.

Collaborative Efforts and Regulatory Engagement

VICT3R is a collaborative endeavor, uniting over 30 partners from industry, academia, and small to medium-sized enterprises. This diverse consortium ensures a multidisciplinary approach to developing and validating VCGs. Engagement with regulatory bodies is also a cornerstone of the project, aiming to achieve broad acceptance and integration of VCGs into standard toxicological assessments.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Toxicology Research

The success of VICT3R could herald a new era in toxicology, where virtual methodologies supplant traditional animal testing, leading to more ethical, efficient, and scientifically robust research practices. Instem remains committed to this vision, continuing to provide the technological backbone necessary for such transformative initiatives.

Conclusion

Instem’s involvement in the VICT3R project underscores our dedication to innovation, ethical responsibility, and scientific excellence. By contributing our expertise in data management and regulatory processes, we are helping to pave the way for a future where toxicology research is both humane and highly effective. We invite our peers, partners, and the broader scientific community to join us in supporting and advancing the objectives of VICT3R.
